OPC standards define the interfaces between software components that guarantee the frictionless information exchange between the manufacturing process and MES systems.
The recognized standard of the OPC Foundation, OPC Data Access, defines reading, writing and observation of data points on the basis of Microsoft COM technology.
With the implementation of these important standards as client and server, it is much easier to integrate the MES system iTAC.MES.Suite with the process layer. In November 2006 the iTAC.MES.Suite was the first MES system worldwide to receive the Client/Server Certification for these interfaces (MES interfaces OPC Data Access 2.0 and 3.0).
This standard does, however, have one decisive disadvantage:
The use of OPC standards is limited to Microsoft Windows applications. This means in practice that the use of a Windows PC is necessary for OPC communication even if both communication partners are not directly operated on a Windows PC.
